The crossing will take 11- 15 days according to weather and snow conditons.

Departure from Johnson’s Crossing south of Whitehorse. The first few days will be on broken trail as we travel to the little Indian settlement of Ross River. This will give you a chance to get used to your snow machine.

The first difficulty met will be to crest the Mac Pass and then descend on Old Squaw Lodge, amidst the Rocky Mountains. A succession of rivers, tight passes and small trails will lead us to Hell Pass at the foot of the plains of Abraham. This is an immense plateau at a high altitude which affords an amazing view. The road will be punctuated by a number of ancient camps that origniated from the people who built this road.

Then we will desend onto the Carcajou River to reach the Dodo canyon, a deep gorge punctuated with ice cascades on either side where the light gives you the impression of being on another planet. Finally the crossing of the McKenzie River will lead us to the small community of Norman Wells. Here we will likely be greeted by the community as the crossing of the Canol Road is always an event.

The progression by snow machine will sometime be wild and tiresome and gut wrenching. You will be taxed often but you will be accompanied by capable guides who will be there to help you every step of the way.

In short it will be a journey that will test your limits and give you a chance to taste the immensity of the Canadian Rockies in the wintertime.
