925 km across the Rocky Mountains from Johnson Crossing to Norman Wells.
The Canol Road was constructed in 1944 by the American army to urgently transport petroleum products from the banks of the McKenzie River to Whitehorse in a pipeline. The workers toiled tirelessly in extreme conditions to succeed in placing pipes along the whole route in ome winter.
Since that time nature has reclaimed the route with mountain slides and new plant growth. Over the last sixty years all that is left of the road is a faint trail between Johnson Crossing and Norman Wells.
The Canol Road has become the mystic trail that was retraced by the crew of the ‘ White Odyssey’ in 1998. We were the first people to do the journey in twenty one years and it was a real challenge.
